OakNorth, S-Cube, and Intercalation Founders Back University Battery Start-up About:Energy
About:Energy, a start-up founded from battery research at Imperial College London and the University of Birmingham, has closed its pre-seed funding round thanks to investments from three notable technology experts. Rishi Khosla, co-founder and chief executive of OakNorth, Nikhil Shah, co-founder and chief executive of S-Cube, and Nicholas Yiu, founder of Intercalation Station, joined forces to complete the six-figure funding round, which will drive development of About:Energy’s proprietary software and database.
About:Energy uses data and software to accelerate and enhance the battery development of its customers across the battery manufacturing, automotive, and aerospace sectors. The company was set up at the tail end of 2021 by PhD students Gavin White from Imperial and Kieran O’Regan from Birmingham, Emma Kendrick from Birmingham’s Energy Materials Group, and Greg Offer, Yatish Patel of Imperial’s Electrochemical Science and Engineering Group, Alastair Hales now at the University of Bristol, and Neil Morris the previous CEO of The Faraday Institution.

“Over the last few months, I’ve seen the rapid pace of About:Energy’s early development. Gavin and Kieran are clearly building a company capable of scaling battery design technology, making it faster, cheaper and better suited to the needs of industry,” said Nikhil Shah, whose company S-Cube also applies algorithmic solutions to solve problems in the energy sector.
“I met Gavin and Kieran a year ago and really like their stories and the problem they’re trying to solve,” said Intercalation’s Nicholas Yiu. “It’s true that battery development projects can be slow, manual, and filled with trial and error. Starting from a stronger foundation, with accurate models, can and will be a step up for any company working with batteries.”
About:Energy was developed through research in the Faraday Institution’s Multi-scale Modelling Project. Gavin White’s work on cell thermal conductivity and Kieran O’Regan’s work on electrochemical parametrisation underpin the business, which started trading in January 2022.
At the same time, Robert Timms, one of the core-developers of the open-source battery software platform PyBaMM, joined the team. His role will be to develop advanced predictive tools to customers that improve design optimisation, fast charging, and lifetime prediction.

Although About:Energy has only been trading for five months, it is already generating revenue. The pre-seed investment will be used to further scale up the business, adding both personnel and advanced hardware.
