What does production scale-up look like at a Tier 1 battery manufacturer?
September 20, 2024
As Molicel, a Taiwan/Canadian company, reaches full-scale production of its new high-energy (260Wh/kg) and high-power (14-minute fast charge, 10% to 80% SoC) cells, we're seeing improvements between production batches. 📈
Over recent quarters, we've been able to track some small but important gains:
🔋 Reduced battery variability – lower standard deviation in capacity
⚡ 2% higher energy at C/5 – reflecting improved power capability
🚀 Production scale-up doesn't involve major changes in cell design or formulation. Instead, it focuses on optimising processes like mixing, coating, drying, and formation to scale production from pilot (MWh) to gigafactory (GWh).
Our Molicel battery modelling programme allows us to closely monitor these manufacturing changes, enabling companies to better understand cell performance as production scales.
